Dr. Thorsten Upmann studied economics at Bielefeld University, where he also completed his doctorate and habilitation. After teaching and holding professorships at the universities of Heidelberg, Bielefeld, Frankfurt am Main and Duisburg-Essen, Upmann then joined the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity at the University of Oldenburg (HIFMB) in 2017 before transferring to the University of Oldenburg. In January 2021, he took over the establishment and management of the interdisciplinary, supra-regional research group "Value of Information".
Dr. Upmann has published more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, primarily in the fields of microeconomics, finance, resource and environmental economics, labor market economics and applied bargaining theory.
His research focuses on the management of renewable resources, the management of natural habitats under regime change, the value of information for management decisions, environmental taxation and ecological tax reform.
Dr. Upmann provides peer reviews for numerous scientific journals, for Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft e.V., Bonn and the Austrian National Bank, Vienna. He has an established international, interdisciplinary research network and can count on many years of experience in lecturing and presenting at international conferences. Upmann is also a member of the CESifo Research Network, Munich.
Since January 2024, Dr. Upmann has been working at the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy IMW, Center for Economics and Management of Technologies CEM in Halle (Saale). There, he heads the "Economic and Impact Analysis" team.
